
Who's Who of Your Claim
During the life of your claim various people may be involved. Here is a simple explanation of those you may encounter:
Claims Handler
This is likely to be your first point of contact. They work on behalf of your insurance company and usually deal with your claim from outset. Appointing whichever professionals are required to assist your claim. They will also advise if your loss has cover under the policy.
Loss Adjuster
If your claim is complex, or of a high value, your insurer may appoint ask his independent claims specialist to review the claim. They will complete site visits and will take over the running of the claim from the claims handler. They will report back to your insurance company at every key stage of the process. They are experienced in many technical issues and are there to see that you get the full benefit of your insurance cover. They also oversee that the insurance company’s money is used effectively.
Loss Assessor
An assessor is appointed and paid for by a claimant, usually on commercial claims to assist with complex cases.
Restoration / Drying Company
These professionals will assist with cleaning in fire and flood situations. They will take care of your contents and prepare the building ready for reinstatement. When a claim involves water, from a domestic leak from a flood, they are trained to carry out passive drying. They can also assist with logging and listing of damaged items and storage of goods in safe facilities.
Building repair scheme
Your insurance company may have their own network of approved builders. Alternatively they may use an independent scheme, usually run by Loss Adjusters. These are a network of approved and vetted building contractors who specialise in insurance related works. They provide the insurance company continuity with national coverage.
